opposition party last night declared victory saying it "is ready to take over the reins of government after defeating President Kessai Note."
The declaration for what has been called the “worst run” national election in the nation’s history comes despite a final vote count not being expected until shortly before Christmas.
Tom Kijiner expected to be the next foreign minister in the new government after unseating an incumbent minister in Note's government said the party “will have to caucus on the matter” at a future date.
“We are ready we have the numbers and we have the people¹s mandate,” Speaker Litokwa Tomeing who the week before the election defected from Note’s party to join the Aelon Kein Ad (Our Islands) opposition party said Thursday. Tomeing has declared his intention to revert relations back to
AKA party chief and incumbent senator from Ailinglaplap Atoll Christopher Loeak said they’ve formed a new coalition party known as the United People’s Party bringing together the AKA senators. Tomeing and lawmakers previously aligned with Note’s party and independent MPs elected on November 19.
Seventeen MPs are needed to form a government in the 33-seat Parliament or Nitijela.
“Members of the new coalition have declared victory having secured more than the requisite numbers to form a new government,” Loeak said.
Preliminary election results show that the AKA has 15 seats but it remains unclear how many of Note’s party will jump ship to the new group.
A returning MP not affiliated with the AKA said on condition of anonymity that discussions are ongoing among “middle of the road” members of both major parties and independent senators to cobble together a coalition that will produce a government able to foster “stability and progress.”
Major shifts in foreign policy are expected if the newly announced government takes over in January with the future of the multi-billion dollar
government “can stay at Kwajalein as long as it wants” if it agrees to a new $5 billion deal that has been offered. “and I¹ll guarantee a new land use agreement,” said Imata Kabua a paramount chief for
But many election details remain to be resolved including close races. Unofficial final results could be issued at the end of next week but there is a 14-day period to allow for challenges and recount petitions before they become official. Four complaints regarding the handling of votes have already been filed by candidates from different parties and more are expected following a poorly managed election on November 19 and the late release of voting results by tabulation officials.
Note has ruled for eight years but is not expected to return for a third term.
A wildcard in this election is the large number of postal absentee ballots cast by Marshall Islanders living in the
which by law cannot be tabulated until next week Tuesday. More than a thousand ballots have arrived to date and could upset the narrow margins of victory from the domestic vote in at least three key races and possibly others.
Incumbent Minister Wilfred Kendall was ahead by a mere six votes over AKA candidate Phillip Muller the foreign minister in 1998 when the
Another minister is behind by 10 votes while a long-term AKA incumbent is down by 10 at another island results that could easily change next week with the counting of postal votes and could be pivotal to which group has the numbers to needed to form a new government.
But Loeak insisted the opposition has the numbers. “The United People’s Party leadership interprets its success in the national election as a victory for the Marshallese people their culture and the Marshallese constitution,” a reference to the Note government agreeing to
missile range without the constitutionally-required approval of the indigenous landowners.
Loeak said the new coalition government has “a clear mandate from the people to reinstate good governance and the rule of law.”
